Archbishop John Privett grew up in Whitehorse, Yukon. He is married to Alida and they have an adult daughter, Anne. He holds degrees from the University of Saskatchewan (BA), The College of Emmanuel and St. Chad (M.Div), The University of Alberta (M.Ed.) and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary (D. Min). Archbishop John was ordained deacon in 1981 and Priest in 1982 and has served parishes in Alberta and British Columbia. He was ordained as Bishop on Sept. 17, 2005 and installed as Bishop of Kootenay at St. Michael and All Angels Cathedral in Kelowna. On September 25, 2009, the Provincial Electoral Synod elected him Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of British Columbia and Yukon.
He is passionate about the life of our parishes for they are the most common places where the gospel is heard, nourished and lived out, and he enjoys the opportunities for parish visits. In particular, our Bishop is interested in Congregational Development, Dialogue, Christian Formation and Spiritual Direction, and is a strong supporter of the diocesan camping ministry.
In the Ecclesiastical Province of British Columbia and Yukon, Bishop John serves as the Provincial ACPO Bishop and in the National Church he serves on the Shared Ministries Committee, The Youth Initiatives Task Force, and the Planning and Agenda Team for the Council of General Synod.
